ABOUT ST AUSTELL BOXING CLUB

St Austell Boxing Club was founded by our Head Coach, Jimmy Waugh, in 2005.

Jimmy started boxing in East London at the age of 7 and went on to become an incredibly talented boxer. He was offered to take part in the 1976 Olympic Games, he became a semi-pro boxer and enrolled in the England Boxing Association Level Scheme.

Without a doubt, boxing has been a huge part of Jimmy’s life.

Jimmy has worked with the Probation Service in London, helping those who have fallen through the cracks and have had a life of crime and addiction.

In 2005 Jimmy moved to St Austell with his children and noticed there was nothing in the local area for children and young people who wanted to get involved with boxing.

With nothing but a pair of gloves and a bag of skipping ropes, Jimmy rented out the local scout hut out of his own pocket to provide a space for the youth to learn to box.

Within the first year, thirty children became part of the club. In 2008 Jimmy was able to secure a larger premises and the club has grown from strength to strength.

One of Jimmy’s passions is being inclusive of children with additional needs and those with poor mental health. Not only does the club instruct young people in boxing, but the club also has strict respect rules and teaches children lifelong expectations. The club's motto is "Trust, Courage, Pride, Honour, Loyalty, Strength and Passion.’

St Austell Boxing Club also includes training, healthy living and allows people of ages and fitness levels to train without the aspiration of boxing in the future. This gives people an alternative fitness opportunity.

Boxing was originally male dominated sport, but St Austell Boxing Club are combatting inequality and discrimination. Boxing is now becoming inclusive of female participants across the UK.

St Austell Boxing Club is a Limited Company, with classes being ran by seven volunteer coaches so sessions can be run every day of the week.

Each week the club runs sessions for all ages and fitness levels and abilities, meaning that anyone can take part and enjoy the benefits. Be that one of the club's talented boxers, someone with low self-esteem and unhappy with their body image, through to elderly people wanting to keep fit.

OUR FACILITIES

Located in the village of St Stephen, St Austell Boxing Club offers three boxing rings and three training rooms for learning techniques and circuit training.

Around the club there are multiple punch bags, and speed bags to improve techniques and improve fitness.

St Austell Boxing Club also has changing facilities.

Everyone is welcome here. I’ve worked with people from a criminal background and who suffer from addiction. Every person we steer onto a better path is a victory for the club. I really hope the club can make a St Austell a happier and safer place.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

St Austell Boxing Club serves as a unifying force for people from all backgrounds

Boxing, by nature, requires athletes to work closely with coaches and teammates from different socio-economic backgrounds. This can help reduce feelings of isolation and shame that often comes with socio-economic circumstances. It can also help people to develop new friendships and a deep sense of belonging.

St Austell Boxing Club holds strong working-class values, and everyone is welcome to walk through the door. The club provides significant economic benefits to the surrounding area by offering boxing classes to local schools and hosting boxing shows locally.
